Early last year, I had a photo session with Sherie in the park. It was my first time shooting in the Woodlands Waterfront. It is an interesting location for a shoot and I would definitely want to go back there for another shoot. Aside from the greenery, there is a jetty in the park where you can see Johor Bahru across the Straits of Johor. I think the jetty makes a good spot for photos.

Having shot with Sherie perviously, I was keen to meet up for a morning with this gorgeous girl. As always, it was immense fun working with such a sporting subject. It was a pity we had to race against time to get some shots as the run kept its steady pace towards midday. We started in the late morning and the sun was relentless on a day with sparse cloud cover.

Nevertheless, it is always fun to work with harsh sunlight and challenge ourselves to get some keepers. Okay, perhaps the dripping with sweat part is not as fun.

Despite it being a Sunday morning, the park was rather peaceful and quiet. There were the odd middle-aged men fishing on the jetty, and a handful of families cycling or jogging in the park. The playground was probably the most lively area with a bunch of children letting their hair down, exuding innocence and carefreeness that would make any adult envious.

A major challenge shooting in harsh lighting is that it causes subjects to squint. The pair of sunglasses helped in this case but it masks expressions and prevents eye contact.

I enjoy editing photos as much as I love being out there snapping photos. Although not as unexpected as finally seeing photos I shot on film or as magical as holding prints of my photos in my hands, it is still a special feeling to see my photos the way I envisioned them when I launch Lightroom. Looking my photos on the computer screen never fails to fill me with the impulse to grab my camera and just go shoot.

This series was shot on the Nikon D700 with an AF-S 50 mm f/1.4G and an AF-S 70-200 mm f/2.8 VR II.
